A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People using these drugs should be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you become starving," said a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
